Fitness Support for Faculty and Staff

We support our faculty and staff as they make and achieve fitness goals. For those just getting started or looking for support, the Notre Dame Wellness Center offers well-being consultations that can help you plan a lifestyle more aligned with your health goals.

The University also offers a variety of options for employees, including discounts for off-campus fitness centers, on-campus fitness centers, and a range of programming for individuals looking to receive fitness and wellness coaching or participate in campus-wide competitions.

Notre Dame employees are eligible for discounts at many local fitness facilities.

On-Campus

The following on-campus facilities and services are available for Notre Dame employees:

RecSports Managed and Operated Facilities

Smith Center for Recreational Sports

The Smith Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Duncan Student Center and is a popular space on campus for students and faculty/staff alike to workout, play, and recreate. The Smith Center includes the climbing and bouldering wall (2nd floor), a full-size basketball court, cardio machines, free weights, a 1/6 mile track, and multiple studios for fitness classes.

Climbing and Bouldering Wall

The Smith Center inside the Duncan Student Center is also the home of the 37 and ½ ft. Climbing Wall and over 70 feet of Bouldering. Climbing shoes are free of charge, and faculty/staff can access the walls with their Irish1Card. Review hours, waivers, and guidelines for using the Climbing and Bouldering Wall.

Rockne Memorial Building and Pools

Located on the west end of South Quad, the Rockne Memorial Building was built in 1939. Amenities include rooms for cardio and weight training, a 25-yard swimming pool and shallow warm-up pool, racquetball and squash courts, and locker rooms. The upper level features a gymnasium with three basketball courts. Family hours are available on weekends.

North Dome at the Joyce Center

The North Dome of the Joyce Center includes 2 full-size basketball courts that can be converted for badminton, pickleball, and volleyball. Table tennis is also available. Family hours are available on weekends.

Joyce Center Faculty/Staff Fitness Room

The Faculty/Staff Fitness Room is located inside the Joyce Center by Gate 1. The fitness room includes machines available for both cardio and weight training. To request access, go to recregister.nd.edu and select the "Fitness & Faculty Locker Room Passes" link. Inside the attached locker rooms, long-term locker rental is available for a fee.

Bookstore Courts for Basketball and Pickleball

The newly-paved Bookstore basketball courts, located west of the Hammes Bookstore include lines for both basketball and pickleball (you must bring your own pickleball net). Participants playing outside are asked to abide by RecSports quiet hours, 11:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.

St. Joseph Beach

Located on St. Joseph Lake, St. Joseph Beach closes on November 9.

Compton Family Ice Arena 

Faculty and staff have access to free public ice skating at noon on weekdays at Compton Family Ice Arena.

RecSports Programming

Fitness Classes

A variety of group fitness classes are available, including classes specifically designed for faculty and staff (F.A.S.T.). Additional fees apply for fitness classes.

Personal Training

RecSports offers personal training for each person to meet their individual goals. All personal training plans include an initial consultation and multiple personal training sessions. Additional fees apply for personal training.

Intramural Sports

While intramural sports are most commonly used by students, any events noted as all-campus men, all-campus women, or all-campus open are open to ND employees. Fees apply for intramural sports. Review the schedule of upcoming intramural sports and other important information.

Instructional Series

RecSports offers a series of introductory classes for activities such as ballet, tennis, and squash. Additional fees apply for these classes.


Athletics Managed and Operated Facilities

Eck Tennis Pavilion

The Eck Tennis Pavilion includes six indoor tennis courts and is located on the east side of campus. While Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s teams and other clubs have first priority for court use, faculty and staff can reserve courts up to 48 hours in advance. 

Loftus Sports Center 

The Loftus Sports Center is located behind the Guglielmino Athletics Complex on the east side of campus. The 300-yard track is open to faculty and staff for walking or jogging during their lunch break from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mon - Fri.

Rolfs Aquatic Center

Open swim at Rolfs Aquatic Center is currently available to faculty and staff from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mon - Fri. Please note that your Irish1 card is required to gain access. The pool will be closed on University holidays, weekends, and for select events. Please contact the front desk at 574-631-5980 for questions about closures. Towel service is not provided. 

Golf on Campus

Burke Golf Course (open seasonally)

The Burke Golf Course is a 9-hole, par 35 course on the west side of campus. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are all eligible for discounted rates and season passes. Carts and clubs are available for rent.

Warren Golf Course (open seasonally)

The Warren Golf Course is an 18-hole course located north of campus. The Warren has hosted multiple premier golf tournaments, including the U.S. Senior Open in 2019. Facilities include a driving range, putting green, pro shop, and clubhouse restaurant and bar. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are all eligible for discounted rates and season passes. Carts and clubs are available for rent.
