Medical Insurance: Exceptional Care, Close to You.

Benefit-eligible faculty and staff may choose between three medical plan options. The plan you choose determines how much you pay for services, and how much the plan pays. All employer-sponsored medical plans offer 100% preventive care and access to a vast network of Anthem providers in the National PPO (BlueCard PPO) plan.

  • Anthem HSA 1: Lower monthly premiums and a higher deductible than the PPO plan. Includes HSA, individual accident insurance and critical illness insurance.
  • Anthem HSA 2: Lowest monthly premiums and highest deductibles. Includes HSA, individual accident insurance and critical illness insurance.
  • Anthem PPO: Lower deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.

The Summus specialist network gives you access to Summus network, personalized, referrals, and individual wellness plans and coaching.

Sydney App allows you to manage your healthcare right from your phone or computer. Prescription Drugs: Keeping You Well

Everyone enrolled in a Notre Dame medical plan automatically receives prescription drug coverage. The University’s prescription plan administrator is OptumRX.

Dental Insurance: A Reason To Smile

The University offers two dental plan options through Delta Dental. Both plans allow you to choose any licensed dentist for your care. 

  • Premier Plan: Lower monthly premiums in exchange for lower coverage and a lower annual maximum.
  • PPO POS Plan: A higher percentage of basic services, with a higher annual maximum.

Vision Insurance: Your Vision Is Our Focus

The University’s vision benefit program is provided by EyeMed. The program offers significant savings on eye exams, frames, corrective lenses, and laser vision correction. You can see the vision provider of your choice. However, you'll receive discounted pricing from optometrists and opticians in the EyeMed Insight network

Funding Accounts: Funding Your Health and Dependent Care, Made Easy

We provide ways for you to set aside money for health and dependent care expenses by offering a variety of funding accounts. These include:

  • Health Savings Account (HSA): Only available with both Anthem HSA medical plans, this account allows you to contribute pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses that arise throughout the year. As part of this enrollment, the University also makes an annual contribution to your HSA each year of $500 annually for an individual plan or $1,000 with a plus one or family plan (for employees enrolling in the Anthem HSA medical plan on or after July 1, these values are reduced by 50%). Unlike other spending accounts, the balance of your HSA rolls over every year. Best of all, the savings in your account always belong to you, even if you separate from Notre Dame. 
  • Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA): Allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health care out-of-pocket expenses (medical, dental and vision) that arise throughout the year. 
  • Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account (LPFSA): For members enrolled in the Anthem HSA plan who cannot elect a full Health Care Flexible Spending Account due to IRS regulations. In order to still provide an option for HSA participants who want to set aside money for dental and vision care, a Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account (LPFSA) is offered instead. As the name implies, medical expenses that are covered by health insurance are not eligible for reimbursement when enrolling in this plan.
  • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (Dependent Care FSA)Allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible dependent care out-of-pocket expenses (traditional daycare, latch-key programs, day camps for children under age 13 and elder care) that arise throughout the year. 

Catholic Mission and Healthcare

The University is unwavering in its fidelity to its Catholic mission, while we recognize among the values in our Catholic tradition is a respect for other religious traditions and the conscientious decisions of members of our community. A tension exists between establishing policies in accord with Catholic teaching and respecting the religious traditions and decisions of the many members of our community. That tension is particularly pronounced in the area of health care, where the University recognizes its responsibility, grounded in its Catholic mission, to provide health insurance to employees, their families and many students, and most of those covered have no financially feasible alternative but to rely on the University for such coverage.

Within this context, the University provides coverage under its medical plans for certain contraceptives. The University will also provide in its plans funding for natural family planning options—options that do not use artificial contraceptives but employ natural methods for preventing conception. The University’s insurance plans have never covered, and will not cover, abortion or abortion-inducing drugs.

We provide to all who sign up for health care benefits the Catholic teaching on contraceptives. The documents at the links below— On Human Life, the 1968 letter of Pope Paul VI, and Married Love and the Gift of Life, a 2006 statement by the United States Bishops—-convey the logic and richness of the teaching. We offer them as guides in the formation of conscience and decision-making about medical care.
