Rewards and Recognition
Rewards and Recognition programs create a positive work environment, improve employee morale and motivate high performance.
At the University of Notre Dame, our philosophy regarding Rewards and Recognition programs is to create a culture of appreciation and celebration.
Our programs are currently being redesigned to:
- Align with Core Values and organizational goals
- Present a memorable and meaningful experience for the recipient
- Provide consistent guidelines across the organization
- Attract, develop, empower and retain individuals
- Integrate with our performance culture
Presidential Team Irish Awards
The Presidential Team Irish Award program has been designed to provide a special and unique opportunity to publicly recognize core staff teams that exemplify the University's Core Values on behalf of their department and the University. The recognition of a significant accomplishment, collaboration or initiative where the Core Values were demonstrated will occur during each of the home football games.
Eligibility
- Teams are made up of core members who had significant involvement in the accomplishment of the project, process, or initiative (recommended size between 3 and 15 individuals).
- Teams can be departmental or cross-departmental.
- Teams may consist of part-time or full-time staff and/or faculty.
Selection Criteria
- Awarded to teams of staff and faculty members who collaborate on a project, process, or initiative that significantly advances the University's Mission, Organizational Goals, and/or Departmental Goals through their efforts.
- Team Performance exemplifies the Core values

- Integrity - Demonstrates honest and ethical behavior that displays a high moral standard. Widely trusted, respectful, and honorable.
- Accountability - Takes responsibility and ownership for decisions, actions, and results. Accountable for both how and what is accomplished.
- Teamwork - Works cooperatively as a member of a team and is committed to the overall team objectives rather than own interests.
- Leadership in Mission - Understands, accepts, and supports the Catholic mission of the university and fosters values consistent with that mission.
- Leadership in Excellence - Demonstrates energy and commitment to improving results, takes initiatives often involving calculated risks while considering the common good.
* All teams are invited to apply, however game day logistics restricts day-of activities to a limited number of individuals *
Award
- Football ticket/person with sideline admittance for pre-game activities for a home football game.
- Presentation to team during a television timeout during a home football game.
- An opportunity to meet President Fr. John I. Jenkins, CSC.
- Framed photograph of team receiving award.
- Award recipients and accomplishments listed in football program.

Presidential Awards
Presidential Achievement Award
The Presidential Achievement Award has been designed to reward and recognize individuals for their significant achievements to the betterment of the University and whose actions exemplify Notre Dame’s Core Values.
Eligibility
Any regular staff employee, exempt or non-exempt
Selection Criteria
Nominees typically will have accomplished a significant achievement in one or more of the following areas: an improvement in productivity, creative solution to a significant problem, break-through effort that resulted in extraordinary innovation or improvement, contribution that significantly impacted the university’s long-term success or suggestion that resulted in a reduction in cost.
All nominees are expected to positively demonstrate the University’s Core Values (Integrity, Accountability, Teamwork, Leadership in Mission and Leadership in Excellence).
Award
- $1,000 (net) cash award
- Keepsake item
- Acknowledgement of awards at the Service Recognition Dinner and Presidential Awards to be held in May
- Photograph and article in ND Works
- Photograph and article on ND website

Presidential Values Award
The Presidential Values Award has been designed to reward and recognize individuals who live the University’s mission and is a role model exemplifying all of the Core Values.
Eligibility
Any regular staff employee, exempt or non-exempt
Selection Criteria
Any regular staff employee, exempt or non-exempt, who lives the University’s mission and is a role model exemplifying all of the Core Values.
Award
- $1,000 (net) cash award
- Keepsake item
- Acknowledgement of awards at the Service Recognition Dinner and Presidential Awards to be held in May
- Photograph and article in ND Works

Service
Currently, milestones reached in years of service are celebrated at a dinner event held on the Monday following Commencement each May. Honorees at this event include:
- Staff employees who have achieved 10, 15, 20, 25 or more years
of service
(in 5-year increments) - Those who have or are planning to retire during the current fiscal year
- Past retirees from the staff group of employees
- Past recipients of service awards for 40+ years of service with the University
- Supervisors of honorees
