Personal and Family Illness

Exempt staff may take time for personal or family illnesses. Up to 12 days are available to be used for your own personal illness, the illness of an immediate family member, or personal business.

Incidental Days

Full-time, non-exempt staff have ten incidental days per calendar year to be used for their own personal illness, the illness of an immediate family member, or personal business. Incidental days are pro-rated for part-time, non-exempt staff.

Leaves

FMLA

The University provides eligible employees with leave from work consistent with the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA). The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, updated January 16, 2009, entitles employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave.

Short-Term Income Replacement

The University of Notre Dame recognizes the importance of income protection when a staff member falls ill and is unable to work. The Short Term Income Replacement program will provide exempt and non-exempt staff  with income replacement in the event of an extended absence due to their own illness or injury after one year of employment. 

Parental Leave

Notre Dame’s Parental Leave benefit allows six (6) weeks of 100% paid leave for the birth, adoption or foster care placement of a child(ren). The benefit, available to both parents if employed at Notre Dame, allows bonding time between the new parent(s) and the child(ren).

Long-Term Disability

Long-Term Disability benefits provide a percentage of regular pay per month after a specified benefit waiting period. This benefit is fully funded by the University. 

Faculty Leave

The University of Notre Dame provides different leave options for eligible faculty members which include a leave with full/partial pay with benefits, unpaid leave with benefits and unpaid leave without benefits.

Bereavement Leave

Faculty and staff are provided bereavement leave without loss of pay for the purposes of grieving, attention to immediate arrangements, travel to and from the site of the services, and for attendance at appropriate services for a family member’s death.

Military Leave

The University provides a military leave of absence to any regular, full-time faculty or staff member who is called upon to serve on active duty.

Holidays

The University provides paid holiday time for eligible employees in observance of the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Celebration (December 31 and January 1)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Third Monday in January)
  • Good Friday (Friday before Easter)
  • Memorial Day (Last Monday in May)
  • Independence Day (If July 4 falls on Saturday, the Friday before is observed as the holiday. If July 4 falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on the following Monday.)
  • Labor Day (First Monday in September)
  • Thanksgiving (Fourth Thursday in November)
  • Day After Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Celebration (depends on when the Christmas Holiday falls; see policy for details)
